# How to Make a Pentagonal Prism

Many students see 3d shapes as a collection of objects whose names need to be memorized. This is not true. The true power of having students examine the properties of a 3d shape and be able to deduce its name. It is also way more efficient to do it this way.

**Definition of a Prism:**

In a nutshell,

**‘prisms’**have two faces that are the same shape and all the other faces are rectangles. A prism’s name derives from the 2d shapes that are the same e.g. If a 3d shape has a**pentagon**at one end, a**pentagon**on the other and all the other faces are**rectangles**then the shape is a**‘pentagonal prism‘**.If there’s a square at one end, a square at the other end & all of the faces are rectangles, then you’re presented with a square prism… and so on and so forth.
