Many students see 3d shapes as a collection of objects whose names need to be memorized. This is not true. The true power of having students examine the properties of a 3d shape and be able to deduce its name. It is also way more efficient to do it this way.

Definition of a Prism:

In a nutshell, ‘prisms’ have two faces that are the same shape and all the other faces are rectangles. A prism’s name derives from the 2d shapes that are the same e.g. If a 3d shape has a pentagon at one end, a pentagon on the other and all the other faces are rectangles then the shape is a ‘pentagonal prism‘.
If there’s a triangle at one end, a triangle at the other end & all of the faces are rectangles, then you’re presented with a triangular prism… and so on and so forth.
