Many students see 3d shapes as a collection of objects whose names need to be memorized. This is not true. The true power of having students examine the properties of 3d shape and be able to deduce its name. It is also way more efficient to do it this way.
Definition of a Prism:
In a nutshell, ‘prisms’ have two faces that are the same shape and all the other faces are rectangles. A prism’s name derives from the 2d shapes that are the same e.g. If a 3d shape has a rectangle at one end, a rectangle on the other and all the other faces are rectangles then the shape is a ‘rectangular prism‘.
If there’s a square at one end, and the square at the other end, and all of the faces are rectangles, then you’re presented with a square prism… and so on and so forth.
